Today, search engines are placing more focus on incoming links to a website when evaluating rank. The reason being is because they are hard to obtain from trusted sources (a “by the book” website like the Dmoz directory) and it is a sensible way to partially eliminate the group of people who abuse the “on the page” factors of optimisation (page spamming). How is this so? Well, if you have someone who is abusing the “on the page” factors and they have no trusted links to their page (they will most likely not get any at all due to spam) then there is absolutely no way of them getting a good listing. However, individuals have worked out ways in getting a lot of links, through link farms and other tactics, regardless of the quality of their website. As the search engines are aware of this, it brings us to the topic of how one link can be better than ten.
Obtaining one link coming from a trusted source can be quite difficult in the sense that they do not issue links to simply about anyone. If you have a good website with relevant information, then you will definitely get them. It is for that reason one link from a trusted source can better a multiple of links using their company websites. As this is “trusted” by search engines, it will also trust the websites it links to. In case you have ten links from your best friends, it may help you in some sense, but no where near as much as the one link from the source like Dmoz, unless your friends features a very reputable website amongst search engines like google.
Having too many irrelevant links could harm your website’s visibility in search engines like google. What is meant from this is having links from websites who have no relation to yours. An example of this would be a site about cars linking to another one site about medicine (unless the sites are reputable and also have a valid reason for your link i.e. there exists a relationship made between cars and medicine). Search engine listings will pick up on this type of link and definately will give it no weight in increasing your visibility. Obtain most of these irrelevant links, then djglva may be seen as spam (such as a link farm tactic) and that will lower the recognition of your own website within search engine listings.
The key is to concentrate on quality and not quantity. Gaining a couple of good / relevant links will require you much further than plenty of irrelevant links. To have these quality links, start off by placing your website in directories, but make sure to avoid any “on the page” spamming because this is not going to get you accepted. Once search engine listings have acknowledged a presence of relevant links, followup into it and research some ways to acquire more. After some time, you will notice that your website’s performance increases, because the links age, provided you have performed search engine optimisation. Avoid obtaining the irrelevant links though it could be tempting to view fast results. It will only be dependent on time before a search engine realises the spam tactic, and as they say “fast rise”, fast fall”.
